Disclosed is an electrolyte additive for a lithium battery which includes a sulfonylmethylisocyanide-based compound represented by chemical formula 1. In the chemical formula, R_1 is: a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; an alkoxy group having 1 to 20 carbon atoms; an alkenyl group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms; an alkenyloxy group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms; a cycloalkyl group having 4 to 20 carbon atoms; a cycloalkenyl group having 4 to 20 carbon atoms; an alkynyl group having 2 to 20 carbon atoms; or an aryl group having 6 to 20 carbon atoms. R_2 is substituted or unsubstituted aliphatic, alicyclic, or polycyclic hydrocarbon group. The electrolyte additive can improve stability of the lithium battery by forming protective film layers having excellent high temperature stability in a positive electrode and a negative electrode.
