1,014,015. Lubricating systems. ROLLSROYCE Ltd. April 2, 1964, No. 13723/64. Heading F2A. A lubricating system for a ball bearing 15 (Fig. 1) in a vertical-lift gas-turbine engine 10 comprises a sump chamber 26 (Fig. 2) from which lubricant is raised through a duct 32 by passage of air through a nozzle 34 and a Venturi tube 31 in a pump 30, the lubricant being deposited in a chamber 22 to flow downwardly through the bearing by way of a plurality of metering orifices 25 and return to chamber 26. Air may be supplied to nozzle 34 through a pipe 35 at atmospheric pressure whilst a lower pressure is maintained in chamber 26 by an injector pump 28 which is fed with compressed air by the compressor 12 of the engine through a conduit 28a, pump 28 also serving to with. draw a proportion of the lubricant from chamber 26. Alternatively, pipe 35 may be fed with compressed air from compressor 12 or by a ram effect. The system is charged with lubricant, e.g. oil, by a single pre-determined quantity, or " shot," thereof being delivered to chamber 22 by an injector pump 23. Chamber 22 may be omitted and a single pre-determined quantity of lubricant is then delivered directly to the bearing by a metering pump (not shown) through a supply pipe (not shown) mounted above the bearing, the lubricant collected in sump 26 being returned to the bearing by pump 30 through said supply pipe or a separate pipe (not shown) situated above the bearing.
