In a process for the production of hydroquinone acetylene, carbon monoxide and hydrogen are reacted in the presence of an organic solvent which contains no hydrogen atoms that participate in the Zerewitinov reaction and trimeric ruthenium tetracarbonyl as catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure. The catalyst may be formed in situ from an appropriate compound, e.g. ruthenium acetyl acetonate or basic ruthenium acetyl acetonate. Solvents specified include acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, dioxane, tetrahydrofuran, ethyl acetate and benzene. Examples are furnished. |
