A method of cleaning solids containing hydrocarbons comprises the steps of transferring solids containing hydrocarbons into a vessel; subsequently measuring the amount of solids within the vessel; calculating an amount of a cleaning liquid required to clean the solids within the vessel; contacting the solids in the vessel with the cleaning liquid; and recycling the cleaning liquid to clean the solids until the solids contain less than 1 % by weight of hydrocarbons. An apparatus for cleaning solids containing hydrocarbons comprises a vessel (16) arranged to receive solids containing hydrocarbons; a measuring device (28) adapted to measure the amount of solids within the vessel; the vessel comprising an inlet (18) for delivering a controlled amount of cleaning liquid to contact the solids within the vessel; an outlet (83) for removing the collected cleaning liquid from the vessel, said outlet being in fluid communication with the inlet to facilitate recycling of the cleaning liquid within the vessel.
