1. An additive composition for boosting performance of water-based drilling fluids, the additive composition comprising:
(a) from about 60 to about 97.5 volume percent of one or more multi-hydroxyl alcohols containing chloride levels less than 5000 parts per million, based on total volume of the additive composition; (b) from about 2.5 to about 40 volume percent of a lubricant comprising a mixture of two or more vegetable oil phospholipids, one or more free fatty acids, and soy oil, based on total volume of the additive composition; (c) from about 0.25 to about 8.0 volume percent of one or more free fatty acids, based on total volume of the additive composition; (d) from about 0.75 to about 20 volume percent of one or more lecithins; (e) from about 0.75 to about 16 volume percent of soy oil; (f) from about 0.01 to about 1.0 pounds per gallon of one or more shale inhibitors, based on one gallon of the additive composition; (g) from about 0.1 to about 10 pounds per barrel of one or more strong bases, based on one barrel of the additive composition; and (h) optionally in the presence of water, up to about 20 percent by volume, based on total volume of the additive composition;with the proviso that if (b) is present, then (c), (d), and (e) are absent, and vice versa.
