A user device 10 has at least one unique identifier, such as an International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI), a Mobile Subscriber Integrated Services Digital Network (MSISDN) number and/or an International Mobile Station Equipment Identity (IMEI), associated with a cellular network 40. An authentication code, used for accessing a service over the cellular network 40, is based on security information, which is based on the at least one unique identifier and may also be based on a service credential that is unknown to the user device 10. The security information is communicated from the user device 10 to an authentication device 30, separate from the user device 10, over a secondary communications link. The secondary communications link may use a short range communication technology, such as optical communication, Near Field Communication (NFC), Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) or Personal Area Network (PAN) technology. The authentication code may be generated at the authentication device 30 and is communicated to the user device 10 over the secondary communications link. |
