<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photonic crystal surface emission laser which, without being bound by manufacturing limitations, can improve the light confinement coefficient in a photonic crystal layer. <P>SOLUTION: A photonic crystal surface emission laser, which oscillates at a wavelengthλ, includes a waveguide composed of an active layer and a photonic crystal layer having resonance mode in a direction parallel to the plane of the active layer. The waveguide has at least one high order waveguide mode indicating a higher order lateral mode relative to light in wavelengthλwhich is waveguided in a direction parallel to the plane of the active layer, and comes with a composition in which a low refractive index layer whose refractive index is lower than those of adjacent layers is disposed between the active layer and the photonic crystal layer. At least one of peaks of light intensity distribution in the high order waveguide mode is positioned in between the photonic crystal layer and the low refractive index layer. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2012,JPO&INPIT</p> |
