PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cationic polymerization initiator capable of cationically polymerizing a cationically polymerizable compound without using a metal catalyst as a counter ion, to provide a method for producing the cationic polymerization initiator, in which the cationic polymerization initiator can be produced, to provide a method for producing a polymer by using the cationic polymerization initiator, and to provide a polymer-modified metal oxide particle produced by using the method for producing the polymer.SOLUTION: The cationic polymerization initiator comprises a metal oxide-containing metal oxide particle and holds a metal cation on the surface of the metal oxide particle. The metal cation is obtained by cationizing at least a part of a metal of the metal oxide contained in the particle.
