The purpose of the present invention is to reduce warping of a liquid crystal display panel in a small-sized liquid crystal display device such as one for use in mobile devices and to suppress display unevenness or the like caused by the warping. A liquid crystal display device according to the present invention comprises: a liquid crystal display panel which comprises a first polarizing plate, a liquid crystal cell and a second polarizing plate; and a backlight. The first polarizing plate comprises a first polarizer, a protective film (F1) that is arranged on the viewing side surface and a protective film (F2) that is arranged on the liquid crystal cell-side surface. The second polarizing plate comprises a second polarizer, a protective film (F3) that is arranged on the liquid crystal cell-side surface and a protective film (F4) that is arranged on the backlight-side surface. The absorption axis of the first polarizer is parallel to the short side direction (β) of the liquid crystal display panel and is perpendicular to the absorption axis of the second polarizer. The ratio of the contraction force (W1) of the protective film (F1) in the long side direction (α), said contraction force being represented by formula (1), to the contraction force (W4) of the protective film (F4) in the long side direction (α), said contraction force being represented by formula (1), namely W1/W4 is more than 0.81 but 2.50 or less. |
