The present invention provides an animal defense system with one or more deterrent elements and an apparatus and method for safely deterring an animal which threatens a user. In one embodiment, the device features an electrified deterrent structure comprising arms and linkages. Further, the apparatus may be configured to operate in a variety of user-selected modes that increase effectiveness and reliability in deterring an animal which threatens a user.

1. A self-protection device for use against an offending animal, comprising:
an outer shaft portion having a proximal end and distal end, the outer shaft slideably interconnected to an inner shaft portion; a control handle interconnected to the proximal end of the outer shaft, the control handle further interconnected to a controller; a deterrent structure connected to the inner shaft portion and having a plurality of arms and linkages, the deterrent structure configured to operate in at least a deployed state and an undeployed state; wherein the plurality of arms expand radially when the deterrent structure is in the deployed state; wherein the controller has at least one switch to move the deterrent structure state from the undeployed state to the deployed state; wherein the at least one switch is further configured to activate an electrified device portion in at least an electrified state and an unelectrified state.
