A compound of the formula A-NR-(CH2)n-NHR' wherein R and R' are hydrogen, n is a whole number between 2 and 6 inclusive and A is selected from (1) anthraquinonyl per se wherein NR-(CH2)n-NHR' is in position 2 or (2) anthraquinonyl of the formula wherein R1 and R2 are selected from hydrogen and lower alkyl, and the NR-(CH2)n-NHR' chain is in position 5. The compound is useful as a basic dye in coloring the hair.
