The system comprises an assigned code applied to an article as a first authentication method, and a biometric type signature generated from intrinsic structure of the article as a second authentication method. The authenticity of the article is determined from one or both of the first and second authentication methods depending on the desired result certainty level of the authentication. The assigned code is preferably a numerical code, an alphanumeric code, or a barcode. The biometric type signature is preferably generated by directing coherent radiation onto regions of a surface of the article, and collecting a set of data points from scattering of the radiation. Also claimed is a system for tracking an article, the system comprising using a biometric type signature to retrieve a record relating to the article and using the record to determine a least a part of a life history for the article.
