PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnetic head assembly used in a magnetic tape apparatus, preventing an output of the magnetic head assembly from being reduced due to an increase of spacing caused by abrasion and deformation of a head element part or adhesion of a stain. SOLUTION: A linear recording type magnetic head assembly has a head rail 102 provided with a plurality of head element parts E including an electromagnetic transducer, and sliding parts S1 and S2 in contact with a magnetic tape. A protective film 12 is provided at a magnetic tape sliding face of the head element parts E and the sliding parts S1 and S2, and the protective film 12 is formed at a part other than a periphery of both ends of the head rail 102 in a running direction of the magnetic tape, and its outermost surface is formed smoothly so as to slide the magnetic tape thereon.
