PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress side track erasure occurring at an adjacent track by distributing a plurality of head elements arranged in parallel in a slider to track areas divided beforehand and selectively using the head elements. SOLUTION: The plurality of head elements 4 (main magnetic poles 41, 42 and 43) are arranged in parallel in the slider 6 arranged at the end of a carriage arm 7 in a direction where the carriage arm 7 rotates in the width direction of a track 2 on a magnetic recording medium 1, and side shields 541 and 543 are arranged on outer side surfaces of the plurality of head elements 4 in the width direction of the track.
