The method involves irradiating soil samples (10) with fast neutrons of high energy from a physical neutron source (3) in pulsed manner. The impulses of the decay process are changed into digitized measured values and are supplied to a computer. A reference sample and the soil sample are synchronously illuminated for simultaneous detection of measured values for a reference decay curve and a decay curve for the soil sample. The reference decay curve and the decay curve are compared by standardizing the decay curve. An independent claim is also included for a device for qualitative and quantitative detection of chemical elements in soil sample.
