The invention relates to a process for preparing a compound of the poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) class, meant to be applied as a pre-tanning or re-tanning agent. The claimed process consists in preparing, by three process embodiments, oligomer compounds of the poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride) class, whose reactivity can be subsequently modulated by functional groups reactions, so as to adjust the tanning potential depending on the specific use requirements.
