The method involves using a beam of broadband optical radiation to simultaneously illuminate a block of pixel matrices, in which matrices are arranged parallel each other, and matrices are illuminated on the side on which an image is observed. The variable optical characteristic of pixels used in all these matrices is refraction index. In the device which includes a screen, which is a multilayer structure made from materials which are transparent for electromagnetic radiation in the optical range, the multilayer structure has alternate layers of material with electrooptical effect, and layers of transparent material which does not have this effect. All layers with electrooptical effect are electrically insulated from each other, and each of them is made in form of a matrix of electrically controlled pixel elements. ^ EFFECT: design of electrically controlled phase volume gratings and, based on these gratings, screens for displaying three-dimensional colour images. ^ 10 cl, 1 dwg
