Polymers consisting of units of formula where R is a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic or heterocyclic radical, are prepared by dissolving at least one diazomethane having a substituted or unsubstituted aromatic carbocyclic or heterocyclic radical attached to the carbon atom, in an homogeneous mixture of an aprotic and protic solvent, the reaction mixture being strongly coloured, refluxing until the colour disappears, and then precipitating the polymer in a non-solvent liquid. In examples, polymers are obtained from phenyldiazomethane, and from a mixture of phenyldiazomethane and p-chlorophenyldiazomethane; the solvent is a mixture of benzene and methanol. |
