PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal display device which does not cause a user to feel the light from a backlight dazzling when an electric source is turned on in a pitch-dark room and is preferable for the protection of eyes. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device provided with a liquid crystal display panel and a backlight disposed on the back surface of the liquid crystal display panel, further has a detection means for detecting an ambient illuminance and, when it is detected that the surrounding of the liquid crystal display device is dark, the luminance of the backlight is gradually raised to a set luminance upon the lighting of backlight.
