PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal aligning agent which can give a liquid crystal alignment layer superior in heat resistance, is superior in print performance without generating bubbles in coating, and ensures adequate thickness uniformity of a formed coating film. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal aligning agent contains at least one polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyamic acid obtained by reacting a tetracarboxylic acid dianhydride with a diamine containing a specific compound typified by N,N-bis(4-aminophenyl)-p-octylphenylamine and a polyimide obtained by dehydration ring closure of the polyamic acid.
