METHOD OF PREPARING STRUCTURAL COLOR MEMBRANE, SUBSTRATE COATED WITH STRUCTURAL COLOR MEMBRANE, AND STRUCTURAL COLOR MEMBRANE

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of preparing a structural color membrane capable of preparing one having a large surface area without defects such as a crack, peeling-off or falling-off and one having an arbitrary intended shape, and a structural color membrane of a large surface area comprised primarily of a metal oxide which membrane is characterized by having a structural color developed by the presence of spherical voids forming a three-dimensional periodic structure. SOLUTION: The method of preparing a structural color membrane comprises applying an aqueous paint composition comprised of a metal oxide obtained by the sol-gel reaction of a metal alkoxide and of hollow polymer particles of a monodispersion type onto a solid substrate having heat resistance at a temperature of 250°C or higher to obtain a coated substrate, and subsequently calcining the resulting coated substrate. The structural color membrane is characterized by having an inverse opal structure comprised of the metal oxide prepared by the sol-gel reaction of a metal alkoxide as its principal constituent with the length of the shortest side of the membrane plane being at least 1,000 times greater relative to the thickness of the membrane.
