The method involves forming a number of variants falling in a predetermined variation region (9), of a sealing strand with different design features. A parameter is determined for all variants and a valuation factor is determined, where the parameter is controlled for a function of the strand. A variant is selected on a basis of the valuation factor, and a new variant is formed by modifying the selected variant. The parameter determination, variant selection and formation of the new variant are repeated until a stop criterion is fulfilled.
