Disclosed is a data record evaluation method that can quickly derive an evaluation metric which contributes to the correction of recording conditions, and overall evaluation. The method involves a step which detects a reproduced signal, a step which detects reproduced data from said reproduced signal by means of PRML signal processing, a step which, for prescribed data patterns included in the reproduced data, computes a first evaluation metric for each data pattern on the basis of the portion of the PR-processed reproduced signal corresponding to said data pattern and the ideal signal of the portion of the PR-processed reproduced signal corresponding to said data pattern, and a step for setting anew the data pattern for which calculation is performed in the aforementioned evaluation metric calculation step on the basis of the first evaluation metric for each calculated data pattern.
