PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a backing device capable of obtaining a good welding shape when carrying out one-side automatic welding, and also to provide a welding method. SOLUTION: The backing device 10 is used by an one-side automatic device for connecting steel sheets E, E to be welded, and carries out welding using a backing flux. The backing device 10 has a backing member 11 with a length equal to or longer than that of the welding groove part of the steel sheet E to be welded. The backing member 11 is comprised of a backing copper sheet 12 arranged along the welding groove part M and mounting the backing flux and a support frame 16 for slidably supporting the backing copper sheet 12 in the direction of the welding groove part.
