PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To control generation of moving stripes without having to apply a direct current bias. SOLUTION: A backlight device comprises a mercury discharge lamp 1, a lighting circuit 2 which supplies lamp current to the mercury discharge lamp 1, and a temperature sensor 3 which detects the tube wall temperature of the mercury discharge lamp 1. A primary lamp current is fed to the mercury discharge lamp 1 by the lighting circuit 2. Furthermore, a feedback circuit 4 supplies a secondary lamp current larger than the primary lamp current to the lighting circuit 2, if the temperature detected by the sensor 3 becomes lower than the reference temperature.
