PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an improved shock absorber interposed between a car body and a wheel of an automobile or a motorcycle for damping road surface vibration input in the wheel. SOLUTION: The shock absorber includes a cylinder body 1, a piston body 3 having damping means 30, 31 provided to a rod body 2 inserted in the cylinder body 1 and generating damping force, a damping force adjusting means 5 for varying the damping force generated by the damping means 30, 31, and an external force input part 6 provided at a base end side of the rod body 2 and inputting external force for operating the damping force adjusting means 5. A pair of movable sealing members 9, 10 are provided at both sides of a through-hole R opened in the rod body 2. A working chamber 11 is defined between the external force input part 6 and the damping force adjusting means 5 by sealing a working medium between the pair of sealing members 9, 10. One sealing member 9 projects into the working chamber 11 by receiving external force from the external force input part 6, and thereby the external force is transmitted to the damping force adjusting means 5 via the working chamber 11 and the other sealing member 10.
