PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method capable of readily manufacturing an organic EL element having superior light-emitting characteristics. SOLUTION: The manufacturing method of an organic electroluminescent element having an anode; a first layer fitted on the anode; a second layer containing a light-emitting material; and a cathode which includes a process preparing a substrate with the anode formed in pattern, and a process for forming the first layer with an average film thickness of 10 nm or less by reforming an untreated layer by UV ozone treatment, after forming an untreated layer on the anode by making solution containing a compound having a group existing on an anode surface or a reactive group X to an atom in contact with the anode surface; a process forming the second layer equipped with a convex part 12a, having a shape corresponding to a layer formation region with the second layer formed, and supplying ink containing the light-emitting material to the layer formation region by a letterpress printing method with the use of a letterpress printing plate 11, with a plurality of concave grooves 12b formed on a surface part of the convex part 12a; and a process for forming the cathode.
