<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a solid-state imaging element and driving method thereof, in which occurrence of horizontal shading can be prevented. <P>SOLUTION: An overflow barrier region 16 consists of a first charge barrier part 40 and a second charge barrier part 41 of which the potential with respect to signal charges is higher than that of the first charge barrier part 40. The first charge barrier part 40 is disposed in a boundary part of first and second horizontal transfer electrodes 28, 29 which are electrically independent, narrow channel effects are generated by a voltage difference between horizontal transfer pulses ϕH1, ϕH2 applied to the first and second horizontal transfer electrodes 28 and 29, and the potential with respect to signal charges are increased. In the case where the horizontal transfer pulses ϕH1, ϕH2 are set to the equal voltage, narrow channel effects are not generated in the first charge barrier part 40, and the potential with respect to signal charges is reduced. Therefore, the condition of ϕH1=ϕH2 is established before a valid period for horizontally transferring signal charges, thereby reducing the potential of the first charge barrier part 40 and sufficiently discharging unnecessary charges to prevent occurrence of horizontal shading caused by heat discharge. <P>COPYRIGHT: (C)2011,JPO&INPIT |
