The cable joint consists of a weldable plastics sheet or strip welded to the insulation; the inner layers of the insulation at the cable splice remain unwelded, and are separated from the outer, welded layers of insulation by an intermediate, thermally insulating layer. Prefd. material for separating layer is plastic sheet or strip of the same type as the cable insulation, with added pulverised talc, Si or asbestos. Alternatively a number of separating layers alternate between the unwelded layers; these separating may be of an organopolysiloxane e.g. silicone rubber.
