A client assistant process and a client assistant computer system are disclosed. The computer system (120) includes a client application (142) of an asset management system having different modes for processing asset tag data associated with assets and an assistant interface (140)for monitoring operating system attributes associated with the client application to determine the mode of the client application, and control transfer of asset tag data to the client application from a radio frequency identifiable (RFID) system (106) based on the determined mode. The assistant interface controls writing of asset tag data to an asset tag of an asset by the radio frequency identification (RFID) system based on the determined mode. The client application can be a circulation client application of a library management system and the correct mode is a returns mode of the client application or the determined mode is an issues mode and the asset tag data written to the tag sets a security parameter to off.
