<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To surely recognize the state of a chip component in a housing concave part even when a carved seal, that is put so as to allow the identification of the front and back sides or direction of the chip component, has a small depth. <P>SOLUTION: The chip component A in a housing groove 4B is irradiated uniformly with light through a diffusing plate 102 by a plurality of LEDs 101 of a pair of illumination devices 100A, 100B constituting an illumination device 100, and that is irradiated so as to obtain oblique illumination light with which a shadow can surely be formed by the edge of the carved seal according to the depth of the carved seal forming a circular portion AA or a letter/numeral portion AB, which is put on the chip component A. In the image picked up by a print inspection camera 85, a contrast between the circular portion AA or letter/numeral portion AB and the other surface portion AC become sharper, and the circular portion AA or letter/numeral portion AB is imaged in black and the other surface portion AC is imaged in white.
