<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an amalgam sphere made of tin amalgam that has a high mercury content, can be safely stored without endangering human's health, and can be used for manufacture of an energy-saving lamp. <P>SOLUTION: An energy-saving lamp contains a gas filler comprising mercury vapor and argon in a gas discharge bulb. An amalgam sphere is used for filling the gas discharge bulb with mercury. A tin amalgam having a high mass proportion of mercury in the range of 30-70 mass% is proposed. Owing to the high mercury content, the amalgam sphere has a liquid amalgam phase on a surface thereof. Coating of the sphere with tin powder or tin alloy powder converts the liquid amalgam phase on the surface into a solid amalgam having a high tin content.
