A method of attaching a carrier strip (12) around containers e.g. cans 10, comprises partially engaging oppositely disposed containers in respective apertures in the strip and thereafter moving the containers relative to one another to tension the strip and cause it to surround the containers. Final engagement of the strip around the containers may be assisted by a pushing member (51). The container may be moved from a tilting position to an upright position, as illustrated, or transversely apart from upright closely spaced positions to tension and apply said strip. The strip is attached to containers supplied in two or more rows, the outboard containers being, in the latter instance, attached as stated above with the subsequent attachment of containers in the intermediate row(s).
