PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extract a marker area from a character string image having a marked portion, even from a manuscript image including a pattern.SOLUTION: An image processing method includes: obtaining the frequency distribution of brightness, color components or brightness differences in an overall area of the manuscript image that includes a character string and a pattern having the marked portion by a fluorescent pen etc.; based on the frequency distribution identifying character area; obtaining each brightness difference, which is a difference between the maximum brightness and the minimum brightness in an image block composed of a plurality of pixels for each pixel in the manuscript image, to identify the character area; performing primary determination of the pixel positions each having a brightness difference equal to or larger than a predetermined range, or equal to or smaller than the predetermined range, as a character area; based on the primary determination result, performing secondary determination to separate a pattern area from the character area on the basis of an area unit larger than the image block; and obtaining the frequency distribution of the brightness, the color components or the brightness differences in an area identified to be the character area, to extract the marker area on the basis of the frequency distribution. |
