PURPOSE:To achieve high bonding strength and low connection loss by facially bonding end surfaces together, and to provide high reliability for a long period of time. CONSTITUTION:A fused material 3 is placed on the connected surface between an end surface 8 of an optical guidewave 1 and an end surface 7 of an optical fiber 2. The fused material 3 is so placed that it is not extruded from the inside of the connected surface between the respective end surfaces 7, 8. The fused material and the both end surfaces 8, 7 are integrated together and are fused into one. When the optical waveguide 1 and the optical fiber 2 are formed out of quartz glass, the quartz glass is also used for the fused material 3, while the softening temperature of the fused material 3 is set lower than those of the optical waveguide 1 and the optical fiber 2. The refractive index of the fused material 3 is similar to those of the optical waveguide 1 as well as of the core of the optical fiber 2, i.e., approximately + or -0.1% within range. |
