A method for removing carbon from a char product formed by heating a silica-containing rubber compound in an inert atmosphere or under vacuum, the method comprising heating the char product in an oxidising atmosphere to remove carbon material from it to give a silica-containing product. The method may include the step of forming the char product as indicated. The silica-containing rubber compound may be a vehicle tyre rubber. The oxidising atmosphere may be air. Heating in the oxidising atmosphere may be carried out for between 15 minutes and 6 hours, such heating may be carried out at a temperature between 300°C and 1600°C. The method may remove substantially all of the carbon based material from the char product, and may give a product wherein the amount of silica recovered is greater than 90% of the silica in the starting silica-containing rubber compound. The silica-containing product may comprise at least 75% silica, and may comprise less than 5% by weight carbon material. The method may further comprise the incorporation of the recovered silica containing product into a rubber composition. The silica-containing product is also claimed, including a rubber compound comprising the same, and a vehicle tyre formed of the rubber compound. |
