An assembly for the controlled release of a compression load comprises first and second collars 1, 2 which are arranged to be movable towards one another, at least one intervening wedge (3, Fig. 6), which is arranged to be movable for effecting movement of the first and second collars towards one another; and a movement mechanism 4, which is arranged to control movement of the wedge. Preferably the collars 1, 2 include through bores which are axially aligned in use to form a through hole extending through the assembly which is configured to receive the jack of a prop. The movement mechanism 4 may be offset from a central axis of the through hole, and may be located entirely outside of the through hole. Preferably a plurality of wedges are provided with a plurality of wedge support members (15a, 15b. Fig 8a, 8b), the wedge support members being pivotally interconnected to one another. |
