发明名称 An improved method of and apparatus for sealing bags or like containers
摘要 530,845. Closing bags. JACKSON, L. MELLERSH-. (Kellogg Co.). June 20, 1939, No. 17995. [Class 94 (i)] In the closing of waxed bags or liners for cartons, the opposed surfaces of the upper portions of the walls are heated and pressed together and then mechanically interlocked by deformation and cooled. The deformation may involve. indenting each wall in opposite directions to form alternate depressions and projections in one wall co-operating with corresponding projections and depressions in the other wall to prevent slipping or disengagement during subsequent operations such as the folding down of the sealed surfaces to permit closing of the carton. The carton 1, Fig. 2, is fed into the machine by a belt, between guides 3, rods 5 holding the flaps 4 in the open position. The upper portion of the liner 2 comes between irons 6, one or both of which may be heated, which move towards each other and flatten and seal the top of the liner. The transverse movements of the irons are accomplished by means of rocking levers 25 and links 24 connected to a carriage 12 sliding on rods 13. The irons are also adapted to move longitudinally so as to accompany the carton in its travel. This is accomplished by means of racks 14, 18 co-operating with pinions 15. The rack 14 is fixed to a carriage 9 sliding on longitudinal rods 10, the rack 18 is fixed to the carriage 12 and the pinion is on a sliding block 16. At the next station of work, the top of the liner is engaged between chains 33, Figs. 5 and 6, composed of overlapping links arranged so that a projecting portion on one chain fits into a receding portion between two links on the opposite chain this causing a crimping effect as shown in Fig. 11. The chains are resiliently pressed together by springs 45 acting on movable plates 42 supporting the rear surfaces. Blasts of cold air are projected through apertures 48 in a pipe 47 so that the adhesion of the sealed ends of the liner is ensured. Specifications 218,355, [Class 94 (i)], and 530,846 are referred to.
