Disclosed are a serial communications apparatus having a layered communications architecture and a method thereof. According to an embodiment of the present invention, the serial communications method comprises the following steps: a first layer transmits a first signal to a second layer based on a signal received through a communications line; a second layer notifies reception of the first signal to a third layer; the third layer responds to the second layer based on whether there is an operation to be performed; the second layer transmits a second signal to the first layer based on the response of the third layer; and the first layer enters a power saving state according to the second signal.
