A dry surface contact rectifier is supported in a framework constructed of material having a lower coefficient of expansion than that of the materials forming the cell units so that during working conditions the framework maintains the units under high compression without using springs. Metal wedges having a high thermal expansion coefficient may be inserted in the interior of the cell column, or end and intermediate pieces of similar material may be employed and these may constitute the rectifier terminals. In one construction, as shown in the Figure, the rectifier column c is clamped in a mounting a of steel or iron-nickel alloy between copper plates b insulated by mica . discs e. Intermediate plates of zinc, or metal wedges of high expansion coefficient may be inserted between the rectifier units, or these intermediate parts may be divided and a metal such as bismuth run into the joint. The rectifier units may comprise discs of electron metal (an alloy of aluminium and magnesium), copper sulphide, and nickel.</p> |
