Provided is a liquid crystal display device which satisfies the need of a narrow frame, is highly reliable, and also has excellent afterimage characteristics. The liquid crystal display device (10) includes a pair of substrates (11, 14), liquid crystal alignment layers (17, 18), a seal member (19), and a liquid crystal layer (22) including liquid crystal molecules (21). The seal member (19) is arranged on the surfaces of the liquid crystal alignment layers (17, 18). The liquid crystal alignment layers (17, 18) are thin films including a polymer (P) having a partial structure of the following (1) or (2) on a main chain: (1) an alkylene chain having three or more carbon atoms, and (2) a structure having one or more selected from the group consisting of -CO-, -O-, -NH- and -Si(R^1)_2-, wherein R^1 is a monovalent hydrocarbon group having 1-12 carbon atoms, in a carbon-carbon bond of an alkylene chain having three or more carbon atoms. |
