<p>Disclosed are methods, apparatus and techniques for timing synchronisation and device discovery in ad-hoc networks or in systems involving direct communication capable devices without network coverage. Particularly, the disclosed methods and techniques may allow a direct communication capable device to discover, select and adopt an existing reference timer within its proximity for establishing time synchronisation with surrounding direct communication capable device(s), thereby enabling device discovery and direct communication, and/or the disclosed methods and techniques may allow a device to nominate its local timer as reference timer to establish, provide and maintain synchronisation services to other devices happening to be within its transmission range. Furthermore, the disclosed methods and techniques may be configured to allow an established common reference timer to propagate, repeat and hence expand the coverage in a centralised or distributed manner.</p> |
