Improvements in golf clubs

[Class 132 (ii).] A golf club shaft of metal tubing is formed with the region of maximum diameter situated centrally or otherwise intermediate the ends of the shaft, the diameter and annular cross-sectional area of the tube decreasing towards each end. The shaft may taper towards both ends as shown in Figs. 1 and 4 with the point of maximum diameter at 11, or as in Fig. 3 may taper towards one end 21 and have a stepped portion 22 of uniform cross-section at the other with a central portion 20 of uniform cross-section, or as in Fig. 2 may have a central portion 15 of uniform cross-section with stepped portions 16-17 of uniform but reduced crosssection on either side. In the construction shown in Fig. 5 the shaft is formed of two parts 23, 24 of tapering metal tube secured with their larger ends 27 together by an internal connecting sleeve 25 riveted to each part by rivets 26, or the parts may be welded, brazed or soldered at their meeting edges 27 to make or assist in the connection and to complete the joint between the two parts. The shaft may be constructed in one piece, either as a seamless tube or as a welded tube, and the taper in both directions from the central portion may be formed in the initial forming process of the tube, or by one or more subsequent drawing, rolling or other operations. With the above constructions the shaft includes in its length two flexible portions separated by a portion of stiffer construction. The above shafts may be applied to any form of golf club but are particularly applicable to drivers, brassies and spoons.
