A polymeric composition includes an organic polymeric substrate and metal-organic frameworks on the surface of the polymeric substrate. The metal-organic frameworks cover at least 90% of the surface area of the polymeric substrate. A method of forming a polymeric composition includes carboxymethylation of an organic polymeric substrate and growth of metal-organic frameworks on the surface of the organic polymeric substrate by exposing the substrate to a metal ion containing solution followed by exposing the substrate to a ligand containing solution.
