[Class 44] A spring-pressed sliding latch 11 is retracted by a lever handle 7 so connected to the latch that it is normally pressed into a recess in a plate 8 or the door on which the latch is mounted and lies substantially flush with the door face. In the form shown, the handle 7 is connected by a link 13 to one arm of a bell-crank lever 12, the other arm of which engages with the latch 11. In other forms (not shown), the handle is connected to an arm on an ordinary spindle by a chain or a link. A pin 14 on an arm 15 of a rod 17 is urged by a torsion spring 20 into engagement with a hole 16 in the handle 7 to prevent operation thereof ; the arm 15 is disengaged by pulling a rod 19 pivoted to an arm 18 on the rod 17 and is retained in this position by a stop 21 on the rod 19 engaging with the casing 22. To facilitate operation of the handle, its free end may be upturned as at 10 or a recess which may be closed by a spring- pressed pivoted flap may be provided in the door surface adjacent the end of the handle. |
