The apparatus has an ink application unit to apply an ink image to a strip of a receiving material that extends transversely to the direction of advance of the material. A carrier unit has a plate that keeps the strip in a preset position with respect to the application unit. A correction unit (31) corrects variations in the distance between the material and the application unit to compensate for flight time of ink droplet. An independent claim is also included for a method for applying an ink image to a receiving material.
