Apparatus and method for pulse welding with AC waveform

A pulse welding welder is provided which provides a pulse welding waveform to a workpiece to be welded. The welding waveform has a plurality of welding cycles and each of the cycles has a droplet transfer peak pulse and a background portion with a first polarity and an opposite polarity portion which precedes the droplet transfer peak pulse and is after the background portion.

1. A pulse welding apparatus, comprising:
a welding power converter which outputs a welding waveform having a plurality of welding cycles, where each of said cycles has a first portion, a peak pulse portion and a background portion, and said power converter provides said welding waveform to an electrode and at least one workpiece to weld said at least one workpiece; and an AC welding module which provides each of said peak pulse portion and said background portion to said workpiece with a first polarity and said first portion to said workpiece with a second polarity, which is opposite of said first polarity, wherein in each of said welding cycles said first portion occurs prior to said peak pulse portion and after said background portion, wherein each of said welding cycles has a cycle duration and a duration of said first portion in each of said cycles is in the range of 15 to 50% of said cycle duration, and wherein each of said welding cycles further has a second portion between said first portion and said peak pulse portion, said second portion having a current level between a current level of said first portion and a current level of said peak pulse portion.
