[Classes 100 (i) and 100 (ii)] A machine for bending box-blanks comprises reciprocating bending-devices for producing bends in the blank, means for automatically feeding the blank to and from the devices, further reciprocating bending-devices for producing bends in the blank at right angles to the first bends, and means for automatically feeding the blank to and from the second bending-devices in a direction at right angles to its previous feed. The machine comprises a feeding station A, Fig. 1, a first bending station B<1>, a transfer station C for forwarding the box blanks at right angles to their previous movement, a second bending station B2, and a collecting station D. The bending-devices of both bending stations are driven from a common pulley 70 through gearing 69, 68<1>. The blanks are placed by hand on a table 1 at A between guides 2, and pushed between a pair of temporarily separated rotating feed rolls 4, 5 (not shown), up to a stop just beyond the rolls. The stop is operated through levers from the oscillating lever of the feed roll 4, so that when the feed rolls are in contact the stop is moved clear, and when the rolls are separated the stop is lowered into operative position. The lever of the movable feed roll 4 is oscillated from a cam which is geared to the feed rolls 4, 5 and to two further feed rolls just beyond the stop, the latter feed rolls delivering the blanks at station B<1> to pairs of feed rolls 23, 24, Fig. 3, which move the blanks up to a further stop 25 (not shown). The upper rolls 24 are all mounted in a frame so that they can be swung away from the rolls 23 to prevent the blanks being fed such that they strike too hard against the stop 25. The frame is swung away against the action of a spring by means of a two-part adjustable cam operating through levers, and the cam is adjusted to suit the size of blanks to be fed ; a lever arrangement enables the frame to be moved manually. Preferably an endless indiarubber band is positioned around the lower rolls 24 to assist in feeding small blanks. When a blank reaches the stop 25, two devices 34 provided with jaws 35 descend to press the blank over two tongues 36 in devices 37 to form bends or wales in the blank. The devices 34 may descend in succession, but, as shown, descend simultaneously, and provision is made for bending the blank laterally so that sufficient material is provided to allow of the bends being formed simultaneously. This provision comprises fork or angle shaped edge guides 38 which embrace the lateral edges of the blank, and are moved inwardly by means of levers actuated by a crank 41 on a shaft 43 to buckle the blank. The edge guides 38 are mounted on a shaft 48 having right and left hand screw-threads so that, when a hand-wheel 49 is turned, the guides are moved to suit the size of the blank to be bent. The devices 34 are raised and lowered by means of eccentrics 42, and may be mounted for lateral adjustment on the shaft 43. The tongues 36 are likewise mounted to allow of lateral adjustment on the shaft 48. As shown, the bearing 46, with which the left-hand device 34 is movable and the corresponding tongue 36, are in screwthread engagement with a shaft 44 whereby on rotation of a hand-wheel 45, device 34 and tongue 36 are moved simultaneously. After the first bending the blank' is delivered to station C where the direction of motion is changed. The stop 25 is lifted away, and the blank is conveyed by the rolls 23, 24 to feed rolls 50 which deliver the blank on to a pair of guides 53, Fig. 1, provided with an adjustable gauge or stop, and arranged above a chain conveyer 66 disposed at right angles thereto. Each guide 53 is mounted on a shaft supported in a member which is adjustable laterally by means of a hand-wheel on the frame of the machine. The shafts of the guides 53 are automatically oscillated at intervals by cam and lever means to allow the blanks to drop on to the conveyer 66 which conveys them to the second bending station B<2> of similar construction to the station B<1>. The blank is then delivered by a second set of rolls 23, 24 to the collecting or receiving station D. Specifications 18798 /98 and 216,958, [both in Class 18], are referred to.
