PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a virtual image observation optical system that enables observation of high-quality virtual images.SOLUTION: A virtual image observation optical system includes a light guide prism 5 for guiding image light and an eye piece 6 which allows a user to view a magnified virtual image by directing the image light guided by the light guide prism 5 into an eye of the user. The light guide prism 5 has an incident surface 5a which receives incident image light and a reflective surface 5b which reflects the image light entering from the incident surface 5a toward the eye piece 6. The eye piece 6 has protruded portions 6a, 6b protruding from the light guide prism 5 in a direction perpendicular to a plane that includes an incident optical axis and reflection optical axis of the image light at the reflective surface 5b.
