PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a grid polarization element whose manufacturing is easy with higher performance and which can obtain higher polarization performance even regarding light having a short wavelength area such as ultraviolet.SOLUTION: A strip-shaped grid 2 provided on a transparent substrate 1 is formed of a dielectric body or a semiconductor. In each linear part 21 of the grid part 2, the gap width t on one side and the gap width T on the other side periodically substantially satisfy t<T. A phase in the s-polarized light propagating two linear parts adjacent to each other with the narrow gap t delays by &pgr;/2 or more than that in the s-polarized light propagating two linear parts adjacent to each other with the wide gap T. As a result, the s-polarized light attenuate by weakening each other. |
